5 tips on how to choose the right size rug

Buying a new rug can be daunting. Fear not, this guide will help you pick the perfect size. So you can just worry about the colour and design.

1. Measure the room

In my years of experience in flooring I have noticed there are a lot of people who just go the store and wing it. This will never work out well because things in stores always look different when you get them back home.

So measure the room

There is even an app for it according to Gizmodo. ( No idea if this works so probably just use a tape measure.)

2. Always check the size if buying online

A rug might look large in pictures but you never really know because a skilled photographer can make things look smaller or larger by using camera angles etc.

(BTW Floorsome always make the size clear before you buy :-))

And you really don't want to end up like this guy

man buys small mat thinking it was large

3.Use a general rule of thumb

According to Harvey Norman

Small Rugs - Small rugs are usually from 80x150cm up to 120x170cm. Small rugs are great to highlight small pieces of furniture and liven up entrance areas, bedrooms and small living areas.

Medium Rugs - The standard size for a medium rug is 160cm x 230cm. This size rug is a good choice for bedrooms, home offices and under coffee tables in living rooms.

Large Rugs - Large rooms generally require a large rug. The standard size for large a rug is 200cm x 300cm. Large rugs are great for living rooms, 6-8 seat dining settings, master bedrooms and rum-pus areas.

Extra Large Rugs - The standard size for an extra large rug is 240cm x 340cm. Extra large size rugs are great for large living rooms, 8-10 seat dining settings, master bedrooms and large entertaining areas.

4. When in doubt buy 160cm x 230cm

This might sound way too generalised and it kind of is but most rugs are actually this size by default. Seriously go into Bunnings and almost all the rugs will be 160cm x 230cm. It seems to be a thing we have just decided is the right size for our rugs.

5. Furniture legs should be on the rug.

Another general rule is to make sure you bed or chair or lounge has its visable legs on the rug. For example

A table with chairs, make sure you can pull them out and stay on the rug.

THRILLED!

This is the second rug we have ordered a floor rug through Floorsome and, once again, we are so impressed. Website ease, choice of rugs, pricing, delivery updates, quick turnaround, and then the final product! The whole process seemed to easy to be true and the rugs looks even better in ‘real life’. Definitely value for money.
