Outdoor rugs and mats for patios, decks, balconies and alfresco areas, mostly made from polypropylene or recycled plastic. Sizes run from 80 x 50 cm mats to 450 x 270 cm, including runners for paths and walkways.
Polypropylene outdoor rugs come in flat-woven and low-pile styles, and most suit indoor and outdoor use, so they also work in kitchens, laundries and covered entertaining areas. Recycled plastic mats are woven from recycled polypropylene. Most of them are waterproof and reversible, with a second colourway on the back, and they are light enough to take camping.
Measure your patio, deck or balcony and leave about 20 to 30 cm of hard surface showing around the rug. Common sizes in this range:
For an alfresco dining setting, choose a rug that stays under the table and every chair when they are pulled out. Allow about 60 cm past the table on each side, which for most six-seater settings means 330 x 240 cm or larger.
Most mats in this range can be hosed down and left to dry. Spot clean spills with a damp cloth and mild detergent, rinse with a hose now and then, and let the rug dry fully before rolling it up for storage. After heavy rain, lift the rug so the deck or pavers underneath can dry, which helps prevent mould on timber.
Like any outdoor textile, strong colours fade slowly over years of direct sun. Many listings describe the rug as UV stabilised, and laying it under cover or turning it now and then evens out wear. On smooth tiles, a non-slip underlay made for outdoor use stops lighter mats from shifting.
